I don’t remember if I’ve posted this before, but whatever.
Am I hijacking Marya’s post to rant about Sofia Coppola? Yes. Yes I am.
“Sofia Coppola is one of the most gifted directors of today.”
I’m sorry, who is one of the what? Yeah, no.
If the word ‘director’ was replaced with ‘cinematographer’ (and she was actually the cinematographer - Harris Savides is a fucking GOD. He did Zodiac *and* Gerry before this fucking film) in the previously quoted quip (and if I wasn’t pretending it was a quip) then sweet baby jesus I would most certainly agree. Her films really are visually stunning. But not so much deeply emotional - perhaps The Virgin Suicides is an exception to that. I’m not sure. I haven’t seen it for a while, but it did stick with me - but that would have been more of Eugenides’ writing and less of her directoral style.
Anyway. I was so fucking bored with Somewhere - Yes, it was pretty. But the story. Ugh. It was all about privilege and isolation and all that bullshit that is seemingly Sofia Coppola writing about her own life, just like Lost in Translation was. Except this one had no Bill Murray to make it bearable. Rich white girl (with bonus famous daddy) problems. The car metaphor, anyone? OH WOE IS ME, I’M RICH AND CAN DO WHATEVER THE FUCK I WANT SO I DECIDE TO PARTY HARD AND COMPLAIN (wait for the first car metaphor) AND GO IN AN ENDLESS CIRCLE OF WASTING MY RICH BOY TIME INSTEAD OF (aaand here’s the other car metaphor) TRYING TO BE CONSTRUCTIVE OR EXPLORE THE WORLD OR LEARN SOMETHING NEW.
Also: I’m going to be pissed if she gets another best director nod for this. Girl needs to stop abusing her last name and writing such selfish films.
